Well what a wild ass ride that was! What can I say other than it was SUCH an amazing competition, it truly felt like a movement. I was hoping it might be something special, but everything far exceeded my expectations. Huge congratulations to Monikker for winning top prize (an EP produced entirely by me, promo from Laidlaw Media and a music video...as well as a John Vietnam CD and album download card from his Dad, Joe!) big commiserations to Fro Magnum Man who had led the entire competition until literally the final hours of the final day and props to DA Donnieboy in 3rd and Bobby Baggumz in 4th. They’ll all get a beat from me each and a John Vietnam album download card.

The amount of entrants we had (hundreds), the quality of the final 40, the final 4, and then the final itself (SO close, only divided by 1% in the last few minutes) plus just the overall QUALITY of entries generally has blown me right away. Even more important was the noble, magnanimous and mature way the final 40 MCs conducted themselves. They were pure class and a pleasure to work with and represent. How you move is just as important as what you say, and these true artists were testament to that.

This was the first competition since the late, great John Vietnam won my only previous one in 2012. Monikker definitely has the potential to carry the torch as do several other gems we discovered during this competition. Certainly all of the top 4, but several more besides that too. Choosing the final with Chuck was a nigh impossible decision, but we did our best! I have said before that 10-12 of the final 40 are recording artists already.

Just by new people hearing or seeing you, you’ve already won. There’s been NO losers in this comp. The 4 finalists generated over 6k organic views between them. We received nearly 600 votes in the final as well. That’s what it’s alllll about, putting eyes and ears on people’s art. THAT is a win for hiphop, the introduction of amazing new talent on a bigger platform.

Finally, I’m just so glad that SO many took part in a lyrical/boom-bap style competition. With such standard, style and grace. There’s truly hope for hiphop yet! We ran another quick poll and a RESOUNDING 92% want to see this all over again next year! So that’s well worth thinking about it.
